The Elder Scrolls VI: Everything We Know About Bethesda’s New RPG

When Bethesda first revealed the short teaser for The Elder Scrolls VI back in 2018, many people assumed the game was only a few years away. But a long time has passed, and there is still very little official information about the project. Now it’s becoming clear why — full production started much later than most players expected. While the studio was focused on Starfield, TES VI was mostly in the concept and technology preparation stage.

Only after the release of Starfield did Bethesda begin shifting the majority of its resources toward The Elder Scrolls VI. According to Todd Howard’s latest statements, most of the studio is now actively working on the project. And judging by how carefully the developers talk about the game and its timeline, TES VI is going to be massive.

What makes the current situation especially interesting is that Bethesda is clearly trying to rebuild player trust. After Fallout 76 and the mixed reactions surrounding certain aspects of Starfield, the studio understands perfectly well that TES VI will not simply be compared to modern RPGs — it will be compared directly to Skyrim, a game that became a cultural phenomenon.

Because of that, Bethesda appears to be focusing on the elements that originally made players love their games. The developers continue talking about a huge living world, freedom of exploration, random encounters, deep RPG mechanics, and the return of a true sense of adventure. From everything we know so far, TES VI is not trying to become a live-service game or move heavily into online mechanics. Instead, it looks like Bethesda wants to deliver another massive single-player RPG experience.

Technology is another major focus. Many players expected Bethesda to fully switch to Unreal Engine 5, but the studio decided to stay with its own Creation Engine. However, this is now a heavily upgraded and reworked version following the work done on Starfield. The reason behind this decision is fairly obvious — Bethesda does not want to lose one of the biggest strengths of its games: modding support.

Mods kept Skyrim alive for more than a decade, and Bethesda knows the community will once again create thousands of modifications for TES VI. Because of that, the engine is being designed with long-term mod support in mind from the very beginning.

As for the setting, there are still more theories than facts. However, most of the community strongly believes the game will take place in Hammerfell. Fans point to the landscapes shown in the teaser, the architecture, the coastline, and many smaller details that people have been analyzing for years.

Hammerfell would be a perfect location for a new Elder Scrolls game. It is a land of deserts, ancient ruins, maritime culture, political conflicts, and constant struggles for power. With modern technology behind it, the region could become one of the most visually unique worlds Bethesda has ever created.

At the same time, the studio continues to stay silent about most major details. That approach also makes sense. After what happened with Cyberpunk 2077, many large developers became much more careful about revealing games too early or making promises that might later be cut from development.

Right now, Bethesda seems more focused on long-term development rather than aggressive marketing. Internally, Microsoft reportedly sees TES VI as one of the company’s most important future RPG releases for Xbox and PC. Because of that, expectations and pressure on the studio are extremely high.

The biggest challenge is that The Elder Scrolls VI is no longer just another sequel. For millions of players, this is the game that is supposed to bring back the feeling of true exploration and adventure that Skyrim created years ago.

And that is exactly why expectations are so enormous. Players are not simply waiting for better graphics or a bigger map. They want a living world, memorable factions, meaningful quests, freedom of choice, deep immersion, and the atmosphere that made classic Bethesda RPGs feel special.

As for the release window, everything still remains uncertain. Despite constant rumors, a launch before 2027 seems very unlikely. Some analysts even believe the game could arrive closer to 2028. Considering the scale of the project and Bethesda’s traditionally lengthy development cycles, that timeline seems realistic.

Right now, The Elder Scrolls VI exists in a very unusual position. On one side, there is almost no official information. On the other, there are massive expectations from millions of fans around the world. And the longer Bethesda stays quiet, the more interest continues to grow around the project.

But if the studio truly manages to combine the atmosphere of the older games with modern technology while preserving deep RPG mechanics, TES VI could once again become one of the defining RPGs of an entire generation.
